You were told to keep an eye on their portions. You did. Mealtimes got waaay harder.
Here’s why 👇

So many reasons why portion control is not the fix!

👉🏽 It made food the enemy. When a child learns that the amount on their plate is being watched, food stops being nourishment and starts becoming a hot commodity. Kids who feel monitored around food eat more when nobody’s looking. They're not defying you. They simply have biology responding to scarcity.

👉🏽 The timing was off. Restriction doesn’t land in the moment you set the limit. It shows up later: the candy wrappers under the bed, the seconds and thirds at a friend's house, the sneaking. You see a brief window of compliance, then wonder why it rebounds.

👉🏽 It was never the right treatment for what’s actually happening.
🛑 This is the most important. Portion control addresses how much. It does not address emotional eating. It does not address a child who is bored, lonely, anxious, exhausted or desperately wants to be in control of ... something, anything. It does not address the stress in the house that everyone is feeling.
If eating is serving a purpose beyond hunger, portion control will not touch it, and you will both be disappointed. That disappointment adds shame to the pile, and shame makes everything harder.

If a strategy recommended for your child’s health is making mealtimes worse, that is not a willpower problem. And it's not a failure of you or your child.

It is a clue that something deeper needs to be identified.
⭐ This is what completely cracked open my decades-long pediatric practice -- any why Family in Focus was created ⭐

Your family needs a new approach, one that builds off of what is already working.

Before we get to the meds-or-not conversation, let’s slow down and look at what’s really driving it. Emotional eating. Behaviors you want to shift without harm. Room for your child to grow.

You already know what diet culture feels like from the inside. You lived it. You don’t have to hand it down.
At Family in Focus® with Wendy Schofer, MD, we find out what is actually driving what you’re seeing at your table.

Let’s talk. Family in Focus has resources for your family, now.
